Comedy has become somewhat of an art form. It is not enough to write jokes, those jokes need to be delivered with perfect timing and precision to tickle the audience in just the right way. While there are many people who take the title of comedian, there are always those who stand out among the rest. Here are five comedians who excel at their craft, keeping people laughing throughout history.
- Janeane Garafalo
The 1990’s were a time of sarcasm and grunge music. No comedian seemed to capture the essence of the decade like Janeane Garafolo. Her self deprecating humor appealed to audiences on a personal level. She embodied the angry teenage persona that was surrounding people, and made fun of it. Her witty banter combined with her general nonchalance has truly made her one of the best comedians of all time.
- Robin Williams
The late Robin Williams brought smiles to so many faces over the coarse of his life. Between his stand up and acting careers, he practically guaranteed that people would be happier after watching him. The immense energy he showed was only matched by his perfect comedic timing. Sadly, he was a deeply depressed man and in August of 2011 he took his own life. Though he had a tragic end, his life will be forever remembered as one of joy.
- Louis C.K.
The gritty, vulgar style of Louis C.K is one that many can relate to. He tends to recite the thoughts that people have, but never actually say. From his thoughts about being a father to his views on the downfall of society, this comedian constantly has people falling out of their chairs, laughing. Louis C.K. has a way of combining everyday life with political criticism in a way that will make people laugh so hard that their stomach hurts.
- Richard Pryor
When speaking of the best comics of all time, Richard Pryor will never be left off the list. He died of a heart attack in December of 2005 and the world became a slightly sadder place. Though his life was filled with struggle hand hardship, it never stopped him from delivering a hilarious set on stage. No matter if it’s a story about his mother or him voicing the inner thoughts of a cheetah, this man could get laughs from anywhere. He is no longer with us, but Richard Pryor has made sure he will remembered for generations to come.
- Bud Abbott and Lou Costello
Though not exactly one comedian, perhaps the most shining example of humor can be found in the pair of Abbott and Costello. Their humor and chemistry are timeless. The “Who’s on First?” Sketch will go down in history as one of the funniest acts of all time. From restless children to angst-y teens, these comedic duo can get laughs from every generation. There have been many takes on the famous sketch, cartoons included, that proves real comedy never gets old.
Comedy is something that needs to be just right. The location, audience and references all need to be performed perfectly to make the jokes land with everyone. Great comedians will always be remembered for having routines that stay funny for decades. Thankfully for us, people like this do not seem to be going anywhere anytime soon.
